According to the 2023 Women in Trucking (WIT) Association Index, women make up 12.1% of professional drivers. That’s a 4% increase from 2022. With a driver-focused culture for over 35 years, Midwest Carriers believes in taking care of the team that serves their customers.
A Growing Trend: Gender Diversity at Work
According to the American Transportation Research Institute (ARTI), women are 71% less likely to have a reckless or negligent driving conviction. Overall, the report found women to be safer drivers, encouraging companies to market trucking as a job for women. Even though the total number of women in truck driving has increased over the last decade, it is still not representative of female participation in the total workforce. The WIT index is looking to change this by gathering more accurate data on women in trucking and management roles.
Career Opportunities for Women in Trucking
Many women choose to drive because of the frequent at-home time – guaranteed every week. So, to answer the question, is truck driving a good career for a woman? With local drivers needed, it may just be the flexibility a working mom is looking for. Whether you need to trade off childcare responsibilities or take care of young ones by yourself, you have ownership over your schedule. With 47 being the average age of a truck driver, Midwest continuously hires to replace its retiring workforce.
Robin Grapa left a corporate job to travel the country via truck 10 years ago. She says, “I like trucking the same way I like ultramarathoning – it’s a trek, but it’s rewarding to put in the miles and see the sites.” Now Robin works as Midwest Carriers’ Brand Manager helping to recruit other women for trucking.
