Job Description

The OTR Operations Manager is responsible for the overall performance of the OTR, Regional, and Local platforms. This requires mentoring the Driver Managers and drivers to meet company performance goals. This includes meeting customer service pick-up and delivery requirements, achieving equipment performance standards, maintaining an excellent safety record and retaining safe drivers and Driver Managers who provide excellent customer service.

Experience Requirements

  • At least 3-5 years of transportation experience and prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge of DOT regulations and the transportation industry preferred
  • Insurance approved driving record

Education Requirements

Associates Degree or above in logistics, business or related field preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This role is responsible for the supervision of the Driver Managers, Planner and Customer Service team.

  • Oversee the Driver Managers and their group to ensure that all aspects are being taken care of in accordance with customer and company expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Maintenance to ensure equipment needs are being met (number of trailers, breakdowns, repairs, purchasing needs, etc.)
  • Be ready, willing and able to fill in at other desks during a teammates time of absence.
  • Manage/Schedule weekend on-call needs
  • Work directly with the Accounting Department on billing paperwork, timecards, etc. using TruckMate.
  • Understand customer needs, policies and procedures and ensure all employees on the account are in compliance.
  • Ensure that drivers are scheduled efficiently to ensure that all customers are covered in a timely manner
  • Identify potential account risks and work to develop/implement strategies to minimize impact and control deviations from estimated costs.
  • Lead and retain a designated fleet of drivers following driver manager guidelines. In collaboration with Human Resources, assist drivers with long term plans and career development.
  • Work with our Safety and Compliance Departments to promote positive driver relations, safe operations of equipment and the reduction of driver turnover.
  • Ensure a cooperative environment with consistent communication and the timely flow of information concerning all operational issues, including pick up, delivery, trailer pools, and other customer expectations.
  • Responsible for the contribution to the efficient and effective operation of a fast-paced team.
  • Maintain a calm and professional demeanor when dealing with upset drivers, team members, customers, etc.
  • Ensure fair and consistent application of and adherence to company policies.
  • Understand and successfully train drivers on Midwest’s Mobile App, Peoplenet, Weight & Management Scale, Cargo Security and Securement Loading
  • Ability to understand and apply the Hours-of-Service regulations
  • Partnership approach with all customers to ensure lasting relationships and organic growth. Also, proactively leading customers with a “what if” approach to provide value added solutions, primarily in supply chain.
  • Understand, or be willing to learn, the basic mechanics of tractor/trailer operation to help driver associates with mechanical questions/issues.
